Lady Gaga Is A Mermaid On The Cover Of The World's Largest Magazine Ever - Visionaire 61

Lady Gaga may be huge right now in terms of stature in the world of pop music, but now she's literally gotten huge for the cover of Visionaire 61: "Larger Than Life."

The "Born This Way" singer has found herself on the cover of yet another magazine - only this one's a record-breaking seven feet tall!

Dressed as a mermaid in black paint and quoted as saying, "There is no oil too thick as to destroy the imagination," Lady Gaga was chosen as the cover subject because "no contemporary figure symbolizes Larger Than Life" more than she does. She was photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin for the front & back covers of the issue, which is available in two limited editions.

The Standard Edition of the magazine is non-record breaking, measuring in at just over three feet by four feet. Limited to only 2500 numbered copies it'll only set you back a mere $375.

But the biggest Lady Gaga fans will have to act quickly if they want onf of the extremely limited Guinness World Records certified Deluxe Editions - there's only 250 of those, measuring nearly five feet by seven feet, and costing a pretty $1500.

Challenging the rules of publications, Visionaire lets several artists and photographers go big with their visions - including photographers Steven Klein, Steven Meisel, Mario Sorrenti, and Bruce Weber; artists Doug Aitken, Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Ryan McGinley, Marilyn Minter, Rob Pruitt, Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs, Sam Taylor-Wood, Josephine Meckseper & Richard Phillips, Marina Abramovic & Martin Schoeller, Guido Mocafico, and Massimo Vitali; fashion designer / photographer Karl Lagerfeld and filmmaker Ridley Scott all contributed to the issue.

Lady Gaga Pees Backstage In Trash Cans

Lady Gaga avoids stopping for toilet breaks during her shows by relieving herself in trash cans backstage.

The hitmaker admits her eccentric outfits make visiting the bathroom tricky, so she takes alternative measures wherever possible.

She tells U.K. talk show host Alan Carr, "I do quite often pee in the dressing room, in the trash can. It would have been an interesting photo today because I had a big pink bow on, and I was over the trash can...The bathroom is down the hall. And I was naked. It was just me, my bow and my nakedness. Me and my dustbin have a very important relationship."

The full interview with Lady Gaga will air on Britain's "Alan Carr: Chatty Man" on Sunday.

Lady Gaga Nominated for Two MTV O Music Awards

Lady Gaga has been nominated for 2 MTV O Music Awards in the Fan Army FTW & Must Follow Artist on Twitter category!
The O Music Awards honor the artists, innovators, fans & web celebrities that are driving change and impacting the way we discover, share, and enjoy music.

Following the success of the inaugural O Music Awards from April, MTV Music Group today announced that O Music Awards 2, the multiplatform event celebrating and honoring the artists, innovators and fans of digital music culture will return for this year’s second awards festivities live on October 31, 2011.

Lady Gaga and Nicola Formichetti premiered a short film directed by Ruth Hogben, which unveils The Masterpiece that Nicola designed for Lady Gaga as part of the VIVA GLAM social awareness campaign.

The interactive movement on VIVAGLAM.COM leveraged the powerful voices of Gaga’s monsters and M·A·C fans to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and ultimately support men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally. Participants contributed self-portraits, shared information about HIV/AIDS and encouraged friends to ‘live with passion and love with protection’ across their personal social networks. Thousands of people participated and Nicola chose select images to incorporate in the design of The Masterpiece, a dress that Lady Gaga reveals in the film.

The film celebrates the success of Lady Gaga’s VIVA GLAM campaign, which has helped to raise $55 million for the M·A·C AIDS Fund over the past two years.

Lady Gaga VMA

I realize that I may be a bit behind the times to be addressing (ha!) Lady Gaga's fashion stunt of last fall, but meat's been on my mind this week as I'm about to embark on 30 days of eating vegetarian - largely as a result of the text we're teaching in our introductory rhetoric classes here at UT: Colin Beavan's No Impact Man. But that's another story. Gaga's appearance at the Mtv Video Music Awards sparked controversy that dissipated rather quickly, and though this may have been due to the singer's own inability to adequately (or logically) explain the reasons behind her wardrobe choice, the images left behind offer a really interesting opportunity for varying and disparate interpretations.

While I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) to discover that Jezebel didn't have much to say about the dress, my immediate reaction was to think of the outfit as a commentary on female objectification. The dress literalizes an all too familiar trope - that women are just pieces of meat - and the contrast between the female body and the hunks of beef strewn about it seemingly negates the metaphor by calling attention to it. Yet considering Gaga's videos and her ethos in general, it could also easily be argued that the outfit does just the opposite (reenforcing the trope/idea/attitude instead of negating it), especially considering the precursor to the dress - her appearance on the cover of the Japanese Men's Vogue in a meat bikini. They say we are what we eat, perhaps we are what we wear, too?
